Aging in Reverse: Skin Care Essentials
It’s time to reverse the clock on your skin and halt that aging process!
For as long as I can remember, my grandma has preached the importance of an anti-aging skincare regimen. In my 20s, I remember just rolling my eyes and brushing it off. After all, I was going to be young forever. Ha! How I wish I would have listened. It wasn't until after having my kids, and my skin aging a ton as a result of an intense pregnancy mask with each and the sleepless nights that come along with being a parent, that I started taking my skincare seriously.
After a meeting with my dermatologist, I started incorporating retinol in my nightly routine and adding Botox injections 3-4 times a year. My skin improved immensely over the course of a few months, and continued to improve daily. Now I know these invasive treatments are not for everyone, and now that I am pregnant with my fourth, are no longer safe for me to continue. For this reason, I set out to find natural, anti-aging tricks that I can incorporate into my daily routine to keep my skin from aging so much this time around. Here are a few of my tips, some new to my skincare routine, while others have been staples for a few years now. Hopefully you will find a few that work for you!
Wear Sunscreen Every Day
Sun damage is the number one cause of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and uneven texture, which are all characteristics of aging skin. Wearing sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher everyday is essential to block out the negative effects of the sun. We love this makeup primer SPF 40 invisible sunscreen by Supergoop. It also contains clean ingredients, which is very important!
Massaging the face helps to relax the muscles that lead to stress lines. It also helps to improve circulation, which can result in improved collagen and elastin production. Massage also helps with the absorption of creams and serums. This silicone facial cleansing brush pulls double duty. Use one side for cleansing and exfoliating and the other to massage your face and improve circulation. I love it because it's waterproof, rechargeable, and there are no brush-heads to replace.
Ice, Ice, Baby
Using ice on your skin helps to eliminate puffiness, tighten pores, and reduce inflammation; this will create a smoother and more even-toned appearance. Massage and ice your skin in one step with this ice roller. It is perfect to use at the end of your morning or nighttime skin care routine to massage in your serums and creams.
Tweak the way you Zzzzz
We all know that getting eight hours of sleep a night is one of the BEST things you can do for your skin, but did you know there are also things your can do while sleeping to help the appearance of skin? It's true! One of the most common causes of wrinkles, after sun exposure, is squishing your face against a pillow at night. You can eliminate this issue by training yourself to sleep on your back. If you're pregnant or just can't get comfy on your back, invest in a silk pillowcase. It's better for your hair, too! This one is a great price point and gets excellent reviews.
If you've been following us for a while, you know that Joc and I also have a love affair with our Frownie facial patches! We wear these at night to smooth our wrinkles while we sleep. You can find them here.
Take a collagen supplement
Natural collagen production slows down with age. In fact, after the age of 25, we lose 1.5 percent of our body's collagen every single year. Collagen helps promote skin elasticity, so decreased production leads to wrinkles and saggy skin. This is why it is important to start incorporating collagen peptides daily. Jocelyn and I take OxNutrition Collagen Peptides everyday. We mix it with our coffee in the morning; it is tasteless and dissolves immediately.
Don’t Sleep in Your Makeup
Your makeup can embed itself into your pores, along with other pollutants that gather on the skin throughout the day. Not washing these irritants off can actually stretch pores and make them look bigger. Removing makeup and cleansing the skin gives your pores the chance to stay clean. It also gives you the opportunity to apply serums and creams to fresh skin. Make sure and take the time to remove makeup and other impurities at the end of the day, to give your skin and pores a break.
